What we do

Listen. Connect. Inspire.

Our vision is to cultivate a culture of care, belonging and dignity for those fleeing humanitarian crises.

Our mission is to connect displaced people together, foster their entrepreneurial skills and inspire creativity for social impact.

Our core values: inclusion, collaboration, accountability, empowerment, trust and creativity.

Where we work

How we create impact

Much like the way small pieces of a puzzle fit together to illuminate the bigger picture, we believe there is power in each person’s story coming together to create a beautiful image. People Beyond Borders is a bridge, co-creating safe spaces and opportunities for displaced communities and refugees to connect with each other, build on their resources and support systems.

Displaced people and refugees are often not included “in” developing humanitarian and peacebuilding programs planned “for” them. We believe that those closest to the grassroot issues are best equipped to catalyze change. Our programs are designed, implemented and evaluated by those who live it!

We facilitate a strong foundation to provide safe spaces and enhance well-being through the practice of creative techniques and expressive arts. This encompasses all art forms including visual, theatre, music, movement, photography, creative writing, cooking and nature-based art therapy.

Our work is guided by the model of Participatory Action Research (PAR) – meaning our action plans are based on lived experiences of the displaced people with whom we partner. Research is dynamic rather than static, in which all stakeholders engage as co-researchers constantly renewing and transforming their own spaces by bringing knowledge to life.

Why it matters

DISPLACED IN 2019

2020 is the eighth consecutive year that the number of displaced people has continued to increase. One per cent of humanity is facing an unprecedented level of forced displacement ever recorded. Approximately 45.7 million are internally displaced people, 26 million are refugees and 4.2 million are asylum seekers fleeing disasters, climate change, environmental issues, conflicts, persecution and human rights violations of all forms.

Over half of all displaced people are children

Empathy, resilience, care, hope and strength drive us even when despair, discrimination, struggle and fear might dominate. We believe all persons have the agency to transform their own stories, narratives, spaces and to empower others.
