From the series \u201cAfter Migration.\u201d &#8211; Wal\u00e9 Oy\u00e9jid\u00e9<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">In \u201c<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opensocietyfoundations.org\/voices\/announcing-moving-walls-25-another-way-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Another Way Home,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0the 25th annual \u201cMoving Walls\u201d exhibition series by the Open Society Documentary Photography Project, migration takes center stage not only because of our times, but because it has been a constant theme throughout the series\u2019 history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">This one stands out for what it lacks: images of suffering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">After receiving more than 400 applications, a panel selected eight multimedia projects by 13 photographers and artists. From the series \u201cThe Passport.\u201d &#8211; Thana Faroq<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">The series has been expanding beyond photography and now embraces all kinds of visual culture: Among the works this year are murals and virtual reality 360 videos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">While varying in format, all of the projects are deeply personal, and, for lack of a better word, refreshing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat we want to emphasize and what\u2019s important to focus on is to resist narratives that portray refugees or migrants as a problem,\u201d said Yukiko Yamagata, the acting interim director of the Documentary Photography Project.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Several of the participants are refugees or undocumented immigrants themselves, and some of them have collaborated with immigrant communities to create and share their stories. Their approaches range from celebratory to absurd, political to intimate. That way, visitors may understand the \u201cfrustration of having your experience as it relates to language come second, much in the way that an immigrant, migrant or refugee would experience when finding their way in their destination country,\u201d said Siobhan Riordan, the exhibition specialist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">This year\u2019s edition of \u201cMoving Walls\u201d features \u201c<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/layqa.info\/Across-la-Tierra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Across la Tierra\u201d<\/a>\u00a0by Layqa Nuna Yawar, an Ecuadorian-born artist;<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.omarimam.com\/live-love-refugee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0\u201cLive, Love, Refugee,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0by Omar Imam, a\u00a0<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/lens.blogs.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/20\/real-lives-and-surreal-dreams-among-syrias-refugees\/\">Syrian photographer and videographer<\/a>; and \u201c<a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.okayplayer.com\/news\/ikire-jones-oka-after-migration-editorial.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">After Migration,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0by the Philadelphia-based designer and artist Wal\u00e9 Oy\u00e9jid\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Exhibited against a crimson red backdrop, Mr. Oy\u00e9jid\u00e9\u2019s stately fashion portraits feature models who are themselves migrants. \u201cIt is true that many of these individuals who cross the seas and deserts in search of a place called home endure much and suffer much,\u201d he said ahead of the reception. But, he added, \u201cThese are not the totalities of their experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-1fanzo5 StoryBodyCompanionColumn\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-158dogj evys1bk0\">Mr. Oy\u00e9jid\u00e9 said he presents his subjects \u201cas we all would hope to be seen.
